Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a corporate professional, finding a good mentor should always be a priority. We know that it’s easier said than done – but with a little strategizing, there’s no reason you can’t succeed. Here are 3 essential questions you need to answer if you want to identify the right mentor for you.

 

  1. Why do I need a mentor?

 First of all, you need to ask yourself why you want a mentor. Are you looking for advice on how to grow your career? Or do you need help making the transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship? Perhaps you’re simply looking for someone who can offer practical and technical support for your current job. Either way, you need to be very clear on what you’re hoping to gain from this mentorship, so that you can identify the person with the right skill set to mentor you.

 

  1. What are the key attributes I’m looking for in a mentor?

 Once you’ve figured out what your mentorship needs are, the next step is to identify the right person for the job. Ideally, a good mentor should:

-Provide advice and not instruction

-Have a high respect for confidentiality

-Be a good listener

-Be someone you feel comfortable approaching

Usually, mentors are individuals in senior positions who are ready to give back. Try seeking out people who have achieved your ideal career path, or who have accomplishments that you would like to emulate. Shared interests are also a good way to develop a connection with your potential mentor.

 

  1. What are my expectations for the mentor-mentee relationship?

After you’ve identified potential mentors, it’s important to approach them confidently and to be clear about what you expect from them. Do you envision a structured relationship, with weekly or monthly catch-ups? Or perhaps you prefer a more informal arrangement, such as the occasional coffee meeting when a specific work issue comes up. If you clearly communicate your expectations upfront, it’s much easier for potential mentors to decide whether they’re able to make the necessary commitment. By showing them that you’re respectful of their time, you can start building a good mentor-mentee relationship.
